Two anecdotal stories about people being blind to towers.

Last year in the late winter or early spring we had a new mail person
assigned to our street. Every day when we received mail, she took a shortcut
and walked within in touching distance of our 72 foot tower in the back
yard. One summer day I was retying the halyard after working on a 40 meter
loop, our new mail lady came through the yard. She asked me if 'that' was
new, I thought she meant the 40 meter antenna. I was quite surprised when
she said 'no, I meant the tower'. She had never noticed the tower which is
right beside the path she took several times a week for at least two or
three months.

Next story, even harder to believe. I was talking to a sometimes active Ham
Radio Op who lives in our little town and frequently walks by our house. One
day in conversation he asked me what was new with my station and I mentioned
our new 72 foot tower and beam that he must have seen when out for his
walks. Imagine my surprise when he told me he had never seen it.

As far as real estate and home sales on our two streets (I live on a
corner), none of my new neighbours had ever told me my towers have been an
issue when considering the purchase of their homes. The most cantankerous
old neighbour I ever had was more concerned over me not cutting my grass or
raking leaves to his schedule, but never once mentioned my antennas. It
seems grass and fertilizers were more of concern to this neighbour then a
tower.

The most popular question to my antennas relates to my 80 meter folded
dipole. I have been asked countless times what is that, meaning the folded
dipole? To which I answer, "A squirrel ladder so the little critters can go
from the front yard to the tree in the back yard without walking on the roof
of the house." Most people are quite happy to believe me and carry on with
their walk.
