Although regular schedule 40 will work, (The ID/OD are just about right
AND it'll fit the tower top and rotator shelves) it's rough on the
inside and much softer than DOM or structural steel tubing. Welds aren't
real strong either as it tends to be granular IIRC. The problem with
structural steel tubing in this case is the seam on the inside. They
don't waste metal, but there is enough of a raised ridge that it has to
be sanded down. It's work but can be done in one foot sections, but it's
a long reach for a two foot section. A die grinder bit on the end of a
1' rod might be a bit much to handle. OTOH a stone can be pretty slow,
hence the desire for something like DOM tubing which is nice and smooth
on the inside.
