Unfortunately you would have to drill to a depth of 20' to reach stable soil
(limestone). FYI, the frost line around here is typically less than 1'.
I may be worrying about nothing. Possibly if the soil starts shifting I can
retension the guys.

Below the frost line, however, the ground is very stable.
I'm wondering: is there a depth where you are free of this problem of
expanding and contracting soil?
Since it sounds like you're guying this tower, the base just has to prevent
the tower from being pulled into the ground by its own weight and that of
the guys. If you do have the equivalent of our frost line, how about digging
or drilling a narrow base hole to that depth, using a form (perhaps a large
sonotube) to create your base and then backfilling with pea gravel.
The gravel would absorb contraction and compression from the surround soil
and the base would then be stable.
Thoughts?
