Jerry, I use a piece of galvanized hardware cloth ( looks like screen wire
with holes 1/8 or larger) I cut it into a circle a bit larger than the
desired diameter and then cut radial slots around the outside. Bend them in
and it makes springy fingers, which hold it nicely inside the boom. Have
been doing it for years and it works great.
I had to plug some holes in a steel box where a coax enters. The holes
were about an inch or so diameter. I had some of those sanding pads which
look like steel wool but are some kind of plastic made by 3M. The material
is springy and may be found near sandpaper in the paint department. A strip
of this stuff was squeezed into the opening around the coax. It has been in
place outdoors for 7 years with no sign of wx damage. That would work great
for tubing tips.

I would like some suggestions for a material to use for plugging the
ends of booms and antenna elements to keep the critters out. I don't
like using caps because those just trap the water inside. I have tried
plastic pot scrubbers. Those work well for a while until the UV gets
them. I tried the copper pot scrubbers and it turns out they are only
copper plated and they rust in a short while. Other suggestions?
