Amen to this - we have an old maple that has been cabled to help carry the
weight of its branches, using through bolts and wire rope. It is very
happy, and has been for a decade. On the other hand, if you damage enough
of the cambium, the circulation layer right under the bark, it will kill
the tree or the branch above the "girdle." Last year, I scraped off a
patch of the bark of a young maple with my mower deck, and the branches on
that side of the tree above the damage simply stopped growing.
