If you're looking for rod, there's a bunch of alternatives:
All for 1" diameter pieces from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com)
straight fiberglass rod $5/ft
Glass filled Delrin $12/ft
XX Garolite $10/ft
G10/FR4 Garolite $19/ft

These are probably all about the same strength (in general).
