I also look forward to when LED bulbs become inexpensive enough to compete
with CFLs. They offer several advantages such as greater selection of
color, eventually better efficiency and much longer life. With regard to
the EMI issue, however, they will not be a panacea. They require a ballast
circuit in the form of a switched-mode constant current regulator either at
each bulb base or at a more centralized location. Depending upon the design
of the ballast circuit, and its packaging, they can be either electrically
quiet or noisy. It will again be a situation of picking the best vendors
and the best bulbs.
