I had a wooden power pole that Mississippi Power gave me and even dug the
hole and planted it for me. I got a set of steps installed before they put
it in the ground.
You might check with your local power company especially now that they are
switching to those composite poles. Georgia power said they deliver used
poles to you normally. Used poles must be checked for defects carefully.
As to standing on the top, WA5GOH (now SK) stood on the top of my pole
during the installation of my W5HVV quad (QST fall 1966). He worked in the
oil industry and was used to working high up. Heck he told me, its flat on
top.
