Actually the NEC says the smallest conductor that can be paralleled is 1/0.

NEC doesn't say it has to be a single conductor. Yes, your local inspector
might look askance, but if you can make a convincing case that the cross
sectional area of your 3 AWG8 conductors in parallel is greater than a AWG 6
(which it is), then you're good to go.
