My son, the concrete guy, says you are not tamping concrete but are
working to get any air out that will be mixed in when you pour. The
air can create weak spots. We used 2x4's on my tower base and guy
point pours as we were too far in to the woods to get electricty.
Here's what Wikipedia says:
Concrete vibrators are used to consolidate fresh concrete so that
entrapped air and excess water are released and the concrete settles
firmly in place in the forms. Improper consolidation of concrete can
cause product defects, compromise the concrete strength, and produce
surface blemishes such as bug holes and honeycombing.
Just wanted to clarify terms.
