Hi Bob and group,
I think that the fact that you are trying for a minimalist type of installation
with a limit of 3 sections top guyed and 10 feet or less of wind load, you can
be safe with the following method. You will find that 3/4 inch GRC (electrical
iron pipe) will slip into a rohn 25 leg. If you buy 10 foot section of pipe and
have it cut into thirds with the middle piece threaded on one end, they will
make up a set of leg extensions to place in the ground. At the same place you
got conduit , get 3 floor flanges for 3/4 pipe to screw on threaded ends. The
unthreaded ends need a mark 6 inches from the bald end. Use that mark as a stop
line when you insert the pipes into the tower to use the tower as a template
to mark where you want to drill the 1/4 and 5/16 holes for leg bolts. Drill the
holes, and cold galvanize the holes and the cut ends of conduit, then bolt the
legs to tower with the same grade bolts as supplied. (stainless or galvanized
preferred) Dig hole
about 3 1/2 feet deep and place 6 inches compacted gravel in bottom. Be sure
to pound that gravel as tight as you can get it. Place tower in hole and guy it
to strong guy points as plumb as you can get it. Use a 2 foot or longer level
or plumb bob from top center of tower. Now you can place another 4 inches of
grave and compact it. Continue to fill the hole in 6 inch lifts, compacting it
as much as you can between lifts till hole if filled with slight crown. As long
as you were faithful in compacting the gravel and soil as much as you can, use
quality guy points, and remember the limits of this type of installation, it
will last a long time. No adding 20 foot masts or 50 square foot antennas at a
later time please!
Of course scrounging the conduit and floor flanges is a cost saving option too!
Not using concrete will save enough to pay for the conduit and flanges.
Good Luck,
Nick
