In an effort and as an experiment to improve my 400 ft Beverages for 160m I
am considering the use of several Slinky's in shunt at the feedpoint. Tom,
W8JI, has some text on this subject but there are some issues not clear to
me. Additionally, I would like to hear what other's may have tried and their
results.
Tom's paper says to install it followed by my questions/comment:
1. In shunt at the feedpoint: Therefore the Beverage feedpoint is floating
and it is fed via the start of the slinky: correct?
2. Be cautious to extend the coils a maximum amount....//...too many turns /
foot and the slinky will fire backwards: I extended the about as far as
practical to about 12 turns/foot.
3. "Toys-R-Us" only has the small 2 inch OD Slinky's in metal. I ganged five
of them together for a combined length of about thirty feet (feedpoint). Do
I need more of them in-series/ganged together?
4. Optimum termination will always be somewhat higher than conventional:
What percentage, I wonder? I increased mine from 450 Ohms to 750 Ohms.
Enough?
I'll stop there....
This morning before SR, the JA's seemed to be coming in ...improved...Of
course, different conditions could have been present, too. I'll look at it
for several days.
Thanks for any and all comments, etc,
Mike, K5UO
