I like to use Scotch-Brite as a plug. It breaths well, is built for moist
applications and bugs apparently hate to crawl on or through it.

I had forgotten bout that form of protection which is probably far better
than sealing. It lets the system breathe yet protects it from the elements.
Plastic pop bottles or anything of the sort strong enough to be taped or
clamped into position should work.
Here I'd have to come up with some screen, or maybe something like the
plastic scrubbers to close off the bottom to critters yet let the air flow
in and out freely. Here, bees are a real problem. I go through Wasp and
Hornet killer by the case.
