The main reason wire breaks right next to a solder joint is that there
is MUCH less flex in the soldered section - this means that the wire
will flex MUCH more right outside the soldered zone - the copper work
hardens and breaks. I spent a lot of years doing environmental and
'dynamics' testing and analysis - aka "shaking and baking" electronics
- used to see that problem, which is why the military has very
specific standards for what can be soldered, how (like the solder is
supposed to wick up under the teflon, and how the wires are secured to
make sure there is no flex at the solder joints
