Personal opinion:
The legs are hot dipped twice in galvanizing material. The joints are tight
and usually the bolt holes require a taper pin punch to open them to where
the bolts fit smoothly. As the ROHN catalong says "NEVER drill out the bolt
holes! Always use a taper pin punch to align and resize them.".
With this taken into mind I'd not use any compound in the joints as it'd
change the coefficient of friction. IOW I'd put the tower together according
to the book and call it good. Others might go to extra lengths, but I don't
think it's necessary and in some cases could be detrimental the strength
although with roughly 60 feet or so of the stuff and nothing on it, I doubt
strength would be an issue.
OTOH if some one has drilled out the bolt holes and sanded the legs to get a
better fit (which they should not have done) then all bets are off.
