I believe you can use the MFJ 259 to check out a balun. Also, an ohm meter can be used to check continuity between the center and the ground. I lost a KLM balun which 'exploded' on the inside when hit by lightning. I lost continuity. It was an easy call. Of course an easier way is to keep a spare around, and just plug it in.
