Dan et al,
Your idea is great, especially for an SSV tower.
They are BIG sections, so the jack should fit.

One idea would be to take a bulky U-bolt and saddle and attach it to the
mast and see if you could push up on the U-bolt and saddle with the jack.
If you don't have aluminum U channel to support the jack, then try doubling
2 x 8s.

That is basically how I lift my 2 7/8 x 1/4 x 20 ft mast. I use an auto
scissor jack. The top of the jack is the type that has a slot in it. A
vertical plate is bolted to the mast with 2 muffler clamps and the edge fits
into the slot in the top of the jack. Supporting the base of the jack is a
bit of a problem. I have a piece of 6 inch aluminum channel about a foot
long. One edge of the channel rests on the top of the bearing. Two pieces of
all thread rod which fit snugly inside the vertical tubing corner posts of
the crankup, are bolted to the channel. Nuts on the all thread rod clamp it
to the channel and can be adjusted to set on the top of the tower leg. When
the channel is leveled the mast can be raised easily.
I have 2 bearing plates so the mast is stable when jacked up. If I
understand your situation, You have only one bearing plate. You might be
able to fab something up using a moderately loose U bolt around the mast,
above the rotor, mounted to a vertical plate. This would be U bolted to two
of the tower legs using spacer blocks of suitable thickness. I am not sure
what the top of SSV looks like but hope some of this will be applicable to
your problem. 73, Dan, N5AR

Subject: [TowerTalk] rotor removal question

Hello Everyone,

I had a problem changing out my rotor today. Its a rd1800 rotor on a rohn
ssv tower. The 2inch mast has slid down farther on top of the rotor mount
and
Im unable to remove the rotor now(cant slide it out to replace). Im looking
for advice on how to lift up the mast maybe an inch, considering the rd1800
is
still underneath the mast. The mast and antenna weigh about 200lbs and Im
unable to lift it w/o some assistance. The only support I have for the
mast is
the thrust bearing(should have put another plate or support inbetween) on
top
of the tower. Im considering trying to attach some clamp or bar metal to
the
mast and use a car jack or something to push the mast back up to get the
rotor out. Tower is 80ft and Id like to do it right the first time. Any
ideas on
how to jack the mast back up? Thankyou.
