At New Mexico A&M, now New Mexico State, in Las Cruces way
back in the late 1950's, we also drew 5 inch arcs from the open
wire feedline during wind/dust storms. I also had the unfortunate
experience of having a discharge pass through me. We were
unable to transmit using that open wire line and some type of
low dipole.
That station has a long history of activity, first as 5FY and 5FZ
(Dr. Robert Goddard of rocket fame), then W5GEM, and now as
W5GB.
