I used a couple of "seconds" from a local oak cabinet manufacturer. They
were base pieces for bathroom vanities. One was a drawer stack, the other had
two doors on it. They were a little high so I cut the base off each one to
drop it about three or four inches. I then nailed two 3/4 inch plywood pieces
together (there is a big gap between the two and I wanted no sag) to make a 1
1/2 inch desk top which I covered with Formica. After trimming the Formica, I
then put 1 x 2 oak for trim. Pretty cheap to do and it looks sharp.

It is incredibly strong. Along with two complete stations and all kinds of
other stuff stacked in three tiers, I can stand on the top and there is no sag.

If you need plywood, let me know. I have twelve sheets laying around I
bought to get ready for Hurricane Charley....:-)
