I made the same conversion you are talking about on mine several years
ago.
The XA is supported by 4 sections of 3 inch by 8 foot material, end to
end to make the 32 foot boom. It is supported by a Phillystran truss.
When I did mine in the 80s, I called Gary at KLM and told him what I
wanted to do and he said he could fix me up. While on vacation in the
bay area, I stopped by the shop and he gave me a short piece of boom
material that was just the right diameter for inserting inside the
existing boom. This was to beef up the center when I put two pieces
together to make a 16 foot boom without the truss (if I remember
correctly-this is 15 yrs ago, give or take).
I haven't had the XA up since 1990, and it is laying around waiting to
be converted back to XA configuration. I want to put it up in place of
my TH7DX for awhile to reacquaint myself with it and allow some time for
the TH7 to be refurbed.
