I have several small prop-pitch motors that I intend to put into rotator
service. I have reviewed all of the literature I could find on them, but
I have not found a description of how the top bevel gear (with the drive
splines on the inside diameter) is installed (and de-installed) from its
bearing in the mounting plate.

I would like to remove the bevel gear without destroying the bearing,
perform some machining on the gear, and then re-install it in the
bearing. Is the gear a press-fit in its bearing, and is the bearing a
press-fit in the mounting plate? All of my plates seem to be aluminum,
but I understand that there were some steel ones.

Assuming you remove the gear from its bearing, what do you have? Is it a
caged bearing, or is the gear OD one of the races, resulting in a bunch
of loose rollers or balls when you get it apart? Is this the bearing
for which there is no modern replacement?

I have a pretty good machine shop, and can make whatever pushers or
pullers are needed, and access to a 15t press. I have removed and
installed a fair number of bearings in this, that, and the other, but I
would like to avoid screwing up something for which there may be no
replacement! Thanks...
