Maybe this isn't so far off topic, after all...
Thanks to Mel, KD7DCR and Mike, W4EF for their comments, and to Jim Lux
for his private comm's on the topic after my post. Jim made a good
point about the consultants and lawyers seeing BPL as a feeding
trough.
Mel posted this quote from the offending article...
>>>> "If it turns out I'm trying to make a device or sell a
device that would cause interference anytime it's
used, it kind of belies logic that I could raise money
to do that," Birnbaum said. <<<<

...and questioned the wisdom of the investment community...
"Plan B is probably to cut and run with the invester
money just before the bottom falls out. Either way, the
insiders win."

As PT Barnum said, "there's a dot-com born every minute.
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the
american public." :) Well, OK, he didn't quite say that...
but if he were here today, he would. Investors are more cautious
now than three years ago, fortunately.
I think the most important thing said to date was Mel's comment
about the relative social merit of amateur radio versus a perceived
'emerging technology' which could benefit the consumer.
>From an FCC perspective, and public comments by Powell and Abernathy,
they see themselves forging american industrial policy. They're attornies,
not technologists; consequently, their 'vision' is shaped by high
hopes and lobbying inputs.
We need to lobby back (we are..tnx ARRL!), and to align ourselves with
other affected services (we are...tnx ARRL!). Which brings me to THE
point. ARRL. Join. Support. Or lose the battle.
There endeth the epistle. 73.
