The technique I used for aligning my Yagi to north was to let my Garmin GPS unit do the pointing. It has a North arrow that is true north and not swayed one bit by the magnetic field. After mounting the antenna on the mast, I put the GPS unit on the bearing plate of the tower, rotated the antenna by hand until it aligned with that North pointing arrow and then tightened the mast clamp bolts on the rotator.
