Another method I have seen used is to dip the end of the wire into a
ball of molten solder and then wipe off the residue. It takes a bit of
practice, like many procedures.
I also recall (from a long time ago) a very thick liquid used for this.
You dipped the end of the wire into the liquid and a blob of it would
remain when you pulled the wire out. After a few minutes, you wiped it
off with a cloth and the end of the wire was clean and ready to tin.
The name "stripvar" came to mind, but I couldn't find any references
for that.
