You should use a contact burnishing tool. A file is too rough, and may
damage the contacts.
I know many who use plastic food storage containers to protect
electronics outside. I use 'Stuff", a white substance that you fill the
connector with that displaces water. And silicone grease on the
outside. Of coarse there's always Coax-Seal on top of 3M 33 tape.
Ugly, but works.
