The Ice units are not "in and out". You attach the "in" and the "out" wire
to the same screw terminal. So, there are eight terminals there which
certainly takes care of most rotors. I am using one each on a Tic, a

Folks,
I am just about to start the preparation work for a new tower
installation. We moved into a house a couple of months ago and once the
remaining work is dealt with I hope to get started on the tower and
antenna. I have never done this before and want to make sure that all of
the important issues are covered. The land plot is something like 4000
square feet with the house occupying approximately 40% of that. Most of
the land is at the front of the property, as is common here, and the
backyard area is 40 feet wide and 10 feet from the rear of the house to
the back wall. Behind the house are acres and acres of vacant land that
will never be built on. My preference is for a self supporting tower at
the rear of the property, these are available locally and constructed to
suit individual requirements. Antenna overhang onto the vacant land is
not going to be a problem. My main interest is in 20-15-10 but I would
like the option of adding a shortened 40m antenna at some point in the
future. I currently have the antenna, a cushcraft X9 and the rotator, a
rebuilt T2X, capacitor will probably go at the top of the tower.
My first question has to do with height. What would be the best sensible
height between say 60 and 100 feet?
How can I verify the foundation design? Assuming this is done by the
tower supplier and knowing that the local soil is notoriously soft
piling will most likely be necessary but I do not want something that is
over engineered so as to be ridiculously expensive.
Currently I am considering a three legged design in steel tapering from
something like a six foot leg spacing at the base to a 12 to 18 inch
face at 60 to 70 % of the total height and parallel from there to the
top.
I would appreciate any comments and ideas.

Miracles never cease with homeowners associations.
A ham friend of mine who lives in South Texas in a deed restricted
development has actually gotten
APPROVAL from his homeowners association board of directors and their
attorney after a hearing to put
up a TriEX WT 51 crank up tower with no restrictions, etc. He faxed me a
copy of the letter the HOA's
attorney sent him and all it says is to comply with normal engineering
standards for the WT51.
He was very upfront in his letter of application of what he wanted to do and
the antenna he will put
up, a Telrex TB6EM. No threats of PB-1 or anything like that, just very
straightforward. He did
mention he was a member of RACES, Skywarn, etc. and the area where he lives
in South Texas had recently
undergone severe flooding and hams received newspaper and TV coverage of
what they did to help out.
It also helped that he was good friends with the HOA Board president.

antenna project. Their listing says that their 1-1/4" fiberglass rod has a
diameter tolerance of "+/- .125" - or "plus or minus an EIGHTH OF AN INCH."
Surely this is not really the case? Has anybody ever bought this stuff and
can say "I bought it and it was right on" or whatever?
Can anyone suggest a source where I can be confident I'll get the size I
order?

It depends on which page you look. In the catalog it is +/- 0.10" but on the
page for 5' or 10' piece of 1-1/4" (Part Number 8543K17 or 8543K11) it
specifies +/- 0.125"

Very straightforward.
160: Grounding is very poor for the needs and the ground connection is
providing a very lossy unvarying addition to the probable natural 25 ohm
impedance of the L. Low band shortened/bent vertical against ground antennas
with low, broad SWR's are heating up the grass with a large percentage of
the applied power. Using the back yard as a partial dummy load. Dummy loads
have flat wide SWR's.
HOWEVER, you will be able to work people on 160. (By the way, just about
zilch SS activity on 160. But plenty on 75/80)
80: This is a high impedance feed, possibly as high as 1000 ohms or more.
You will need a tuned network to get power into it. BUT, once you do, you
will find that the ground system you describe is "good enough" and you will
do nicely on 75/80m, particularly for SS, and do more than you would expect
with DX. I have used antenna's of this sort on 75/80 since the 50's with
excellent results
There are several ways to feed this. SOME ready built tuners will match
this.
Rolling your own, get a coil and a cap, put them in parallel. One end to the
wire, the other to ground. Run the coax shield from SWR bridge to the
ground, run the center conductor to an alligator clip. Start with the clip
on the coil about 1/5 up from ground end on the coil. Tune cap for min SWR.
Move clip up or down for min SWR. Repeat this sequence until best match. If
the match is not all that good and overly broad, esp if the cap is fully
meshed, add more coil to the assembly. If the match is very narrow and
overly sharp, remove some coil.
Since the coax is only 6 feet to the antenna, you can get away with the
network being on the transmitter end of the antenna coax.
This is a voltage point. You will need a capacitor with some spacing between
the plates, depending on your power level.
There are other equally good ways of dealing with this that will allow you
to use a typical tuner.
This antenna will also work well on 40 and 30 meters.

Those readings are just about what you would expect from an L of your
dimensions with a less than perfect ground system. Your feedpoint impedance
is probably a little higher than 50-ohms right now. With a really good
ground system the feedpoint impedance should fall a bit, down closer to
35-ohms or so. There is actually no need to do any matching for an Inverted
L fed with 50-ohm coax unless it is way too long or short as long as you can
tolerate an SWR of less than 2-to-1. One way to "tune" an L is to put in
the best ground system you can in your location, use a vertical run of 60 to
70 ft, and then adjust the horizontal length for the best match.
