Has anyone ever used a "car" remote control (door lock) switch to do
this? Maplin/Radioshack sell cheap kits that will remote switch over
suitable distance.

K9RB's plan with rope was ok but may I suggest running the rope through
a
pair of screw eyes and making "limit knots" so the rope doesn't get out
of
synch with the switch.
