On proper pole straps, there is a red insert in the strap.
If any red is showing, throw the strap away and get a new
one. If the strap is soft and small bits of material come off
when twisted, get a new strap.

As for the belts, I don't think there is any hard and fast rule,
I have always out grown my belt before it was wore out :-(
