I have one of the Preform Line Products splices.
Basically, it looks like a regular Dead End grip
that has been straightened out. Bottom Line:
you only have HALF the number of strands
(well 4 vs 7) at the splice. Best to use an
insulator and two grips.
Here is my "3 Bolt" Utility type termination Horror Story:
I was on top of a friend's 130 ft R25 tower when I heard
a LOUD BANG, like a big gun going off, and felt the
tower shake. Fortunately, nothing more happened.
When I got down, one of the ground crew guys noticed
that there was a visible ring 1/4 inch out of the 3 Bolt
termination that held the SINGLE heavy guy wire that
connected a torque equilizer plate with 5 guys to the
anchor rod. We concluded that the heavy wire had
SLIPPED in the 3 Bolt terminator and thank God had
held after relieving the excess tension. No bolted
plates for me! (That was 30 years ago)
