I have a similar setup and you are dead-on. I have the rotor mounted at the
joint between the top and next to top section. My top section is a flat top
thrust bearing compatible section and so I have a thrust bearing at the top
of the tower and rotor 8 feet below that. I purchased an extra rotor shelf,
notched it to fit four feet down and put a cheapo Yaesu thrust bearing on it
just to help with installation. My mast is 24' long, 8 feet in the top
section and 16 feet above. It did not want it flopping around during rotor
installation and put huge stresses on the thrust bearing and that is the
only use of the intermediate bearing. I leave it loose during normal
operation.
Hope this helps,
Rajiv, N2RD
