Kurt- because you are a professional stress man, I hate to tell you this,
but the use of a pulley system DOES reduce the load on the top.

Consider the static case of a 400 lb weight hanghing on a three-to- one
block and tackle- balance this with a 133 lb weight on the single down leg
- the total weight is 533 lbs, but the system balances. 

Lokk another way- the tension on the rope is 133 lbs EVERYWHERE.  the total
of the three in the tackle is 400 lb- the single down line is 133 lb- the
system is in balance.  with 533 lb pulling down on the upper point of
attachment of the set-up.
