I am experiencing a similar failure mode when using barrels in coax runs.
Now, I just make sure to NOT use barrels (outside) in my installations, but I
am at a loss to understand why these barrels seem to cause such a problem.
My best guess is that the corrosion problem develops as the result of a
dissimilar metal transaction (cathodic exchange), despite any of my attempts to
completely wrap or protect the plugs and barrel from the elements.
