I'm in the EARLY planning stages of a summer tower project. I'll admit =
right now I'm a BIG TOWER DUMMY (but I'm trying to learn), and I plan to =
get lots of competent help, but I do want to do some of the =
preliminaries going myself. I've researched local ordinances (very =
liberal, thank goodness) and any covenants or deed restrictions (none =
<VBG>) and have ordered Rohn's tower catalog for information.

I'd like to put a 6 or 8 element LPDA (Tennadyne) up around 50'. My lot =
is small, so guy wires are out. I'm against crank ups because I've heard =
horror stories of them freezing up, and I'd like to feed the tower as =
the grounded portion of a folded monopole (which means I'd have to =
electrically bind the sections together which precludes cranking the =
tower up and down anyway). Bracketing against the house is also NG since =
the XYL isn't crazy about having a radiating antenna so close to where =
people are. (Actually, she's not crazy about the tower at all, but I've =
handled those negotiations already <G>).

My question (finally) is whether Rohn HBX, Rohn HDBX, or something else =
would be the tower to do the job? I know neither tower is recommended =
for boom lengths greater than 10' (the T-6 is 12' and the T-8 is 18'), =
but I've read of people putting much more on those towers with no =
problems. Besides, both antennas are within wind load limits (T-6 is 7', =
T-8 is 8') of either antenna, at least if I believe specs I've read on =
the web.

So, can I put my 18' boom/8' wind load T8 on 50' of HBX? Or do I have to =
use HDBX? Or am I limited to a 12' boom/7' wind load T6? Or should I put =
up anything near that size on ANY 50' free standing tower?

Thanks to all for your time, and your help
