Following the advice received here on TT, I called Cushcraft to order one of
their MNXM baluns to use on my 402CD that I am stacking with a new XM240 so
that the phasing and matching would be identical. I was told in no uncertain
terms that they would NOT sell me a balun for the 402CD under any
circumstances. I explained exactly what I was doing, and was told that they do
not sell parts for "other uses" even if it's their OWN *&^%$&* antenna! You
would have thought that the balun was some proprietary invention of theirs to
be sold to the enemy!!
I am really POed at the attitude of Cushcraft on this. I can't think of
another amateur manufacturer that does not sell parts (for whatever purpose)
to hams.
It makes me want to scrap all of the CC antennas I have here (6 currently),
but I'm frankly tired of doing antenna work right now...
Any ideas on which way to go here? I wonder if I caught someone there having a
bad day, and if talking to someone else at Cushcraft would help?
Assuming that I can't get one of their baluns, what balun that IS available
most resembles the MNXM? KA1CLX tells me that he has opened one up and it is
built using 3 stacked toroids of unknown type with 3 alternating turns of
RG400. Sounds fairly simple. I'm sure someone else is building a similar balun
that may actually consider selling to me!
Tnx / 73,
Will
