Some of the personal bashing that has gone on recently on this list is
indicative of why amateur radio has problems attracting new people. So
many people in amateur radio are thin-skinned and opinionated and do
nothing to encourage newcomers. Some are unapproachable because they
feel that the people who ask them a question must first go through all
of the trials and tribulations that the OM did, rather than simply
sharing the knowledge and bettering the hobby. Common courtesy denotes
emotional maturity. Instead of "You're a complete idiot for your
ridiculous statement", how about "May I suggest to you an alternative
way of looking at this situation". It does not cost anyone more to be
courteous and helpful rather than insulting and rude.
