Don't assume that because you live in the country you're immune from
such probems. I just built a house 2 years ago on 30 acres about 30
miles west of Des Moines. . . it's very rural here. The county just
notified me 2 weeks ago that I need building permits for my 90' and 130'
towers.

Before I bought the property 3 years ago I discussed my request for
towers with the county zoning and planning office. They told me that
there were no covenants or other restriction on ham radio towers. They
further advised me that they had never issued a permit for such a thing.
I politely asked for their opinion in writing when I was told that "the
fact that there are no codes or restrictions governing them" was enough
"proof in writing." They seemed somehwat insulted.

I built my tower during the very early construction phases of my home
construction 2 years ago. The county inspectors were here numerous
times inspecting the house while the towers were up. No mention of the
towers was ever made.

None of this, of course, really makes any difference. Now, a new group
of people are running the county zoning and planning. They requested a
permit. . . . . they were nice about it. I, in turn, was polite and
congenial hoping to avoid any confrontation. They requested a site plan
drawn to scale and general information on the towers, base anchors, guy
anchors, etc. I furrnished them the information right out of the Rohn
catalog which seemed to satisfy them.

I have now paid my $62 for the permits and awaiting their arrival. The
secretary informed me that the permits would be granted as they do not
request payment for permits which are not granted. I have breathed a
temporary sigh of relief. However, I will feel much better when the
permits are in my hands.

Don't ever assume just because you live in the country, you're immune
from this kind of problem. If it can happen in rural Iowa, it can
happen anywhere.
