Hello Chad,
I did what you plan to do; so far, so good. I have 130' of Rohn 45G, guyed
every 30 feet, with anchor points 82' from the base of the tower in
basically flat terrain. My anchor posts are 3-1/2" diameter schedule 80
(1/4" wall) steel pipe. Each pipe is between 7 & 8 feet long, with 5 feet
of the pipe in an eight inch diameter hole filled with Quickcrete to within
2-3" of the ground surface. After drilling the hole with a small tractor &
post hole digging auger, I "belled" the bottom of the hole with a shovel &
standard post hole digging tools, so that the bottom of the hole was 3-4"
wider than the throat of the hole. This gives extra anchorage when the
concrete sets up by the fact that the post then has a concrete ball at its
bottom, which is being pulled by the tower against undisturbed earth.
The posts stick out of the ground 3', which allows me (I'm 6'5", BTW) to
get under the guys with the riding mower; I haven't clothes lined myself,
yet. I had a friend that is a skilled welder place a piece of 1/2" x 3.5"
plate steel 12" long into the top of each post in a vertical fashion. He
first cut a slot in the sidewalls of the pipe to take the plate. Imagine
the post vertical, now imagine a slot about 5/8" wide cut 9" down the side
of the pipe from the top, along the center of the pipe side. Cut another
slot 180 degrees from that one to match, insert the plate & weld into
place. Bore a hole near the top of the plate to accept the equalizing
plates main bolt & attach the equalizing plates. Set assembly into hole
nearly full of concrete, plumb to vertical & sight onto tower leg, allow
concrete to set, done. Doing it over, I'd go another 1-2' deeper, & my
plates in the post tops would be only 5/16"-3/8" thick (main bolts barely
long enough), but it has been up 4 years so far, no problems at all.
I plan to install 20' of Rohn 25G on top of this 130' & rotate the 25,
using it as the mast for my VHF+ array; then I'll be able to climb my mast.
