I would feel better about all the PolyPhazer advice if I saw that they
cited any actual experiences with lightning. If they do, please let me
know, but all I have seen so far is, technical speculation.
Has anyone'sconcrete base ever exploded upon lightning? Otherwise shown damage?
In over two decades in communications (cable TV, 2-way mobile, telco, I've never
seen (explosive) damage to the concrete ped caused by a correctly-installed
Ufer. Roger Block, PolyPhaser's founder hasn't, John Campbell hasn't, Ken
Rand hasn't (etc.) Together we represent well over a century of experience.
When I was in cable, my company owned the Armstrong Tower in Alpine, NJ. We
had some concrete cracks and refurbished the peds. The concrete cracks were
caused by age and the fact that the rebar was closer than 3" to the surface.
Basically, explode NO crack YES. As previously mentioned, failure to install a
Ufer
could lead to damage; this is usually cracked concrete.
I have exploded a battery, but never a concrete footing. Oh, well.

Hams greatest asset to the world of science (and of weather, etc.) is
their
huge base of practical, direct, personal experiences with radios and stuff
actually operating in the field, not in the lab or not in computer
simulations. And, hams are good, and sometimes even trained, observers,
honest in reports, and willing to report. Makes them good sources for the
