It's a heck of a lot easier to just back the motor assembly off the ring,
set the control box andantenna on North, and reengage the motor assy.
On the 1022b's, I have had a dirty pot for quite some time...I think he
said he was going to the clarostats to correct that problem. I also had
problems with pinched pot wires in the motor assy. on a couple of them
which caused problems similar to what you describe.
Hey! They arent great (TIC), but they are still the only game in town so
far..

Sorry I don't have any insight to your failure, but I do have a comment
about the pot replacement. W9JA recently had to replace two of these
pots due to lightning.
Although I didn't the the tower work myself, it didn't seem like a big
pain for our tower guy. But what really is difficult is calibration!!!
The TIC ring is different in that when you calibrate the control box,
the only thing you are doing is calibrating the meter. Period.
When you put the control box on North and hit start, the ring goes to
a corresponding resistance, even if it is East, and there's nothing
you can do about it except except to fiddle with the pot at the tower.
(If you're off only a few degrees, you could reposition the knob on the
pot on the control panel, but when you're many degrees off, you need to
adjust the pot on the tower.)
So if you weren't aware of this, or haven't done this before, be
forwarned!
