Found another one of those limitations of NEC-4--or at least something
quite contrary to MININEC, which yields a more sensible looking result.
Has to do with dipole-type elements with center sections significatly
laerger in diameter than the end sections. The shorter the center section
(but greater than zero length) of larger diameter tubing, the higher the
gain NEC-4 gives--to the point of seeming downright unreasonable.
For those who follow modeling, the note on "Multi-diameter Dipoles" is at
the site, along with some multi-color graphs. Hope the note is useful to
someone.
