Newer design N connectors no longer have this problem. There are two
teflon rings that captivate the center conductor to the connector body.
Yes - the original 1950's (1940's ??) UG-23 failed quickly under temp
cycle conditions.
BTW & FWIW - the rule of thumb I always followed at microwave
frequencies was to consider each MATED pair of connectors as 0.1 dB of
loss. At frequencies below 1 GHz, it was considerably less...
