Hello Group!
Reviewing the Rohn bible, er, handbook, I noted the SSV style of tower
(self-supporting series) is offered in two versions; Standard and Heavy
(drawings E680101 & E690800). Comparing the drawings, I've not found any
real changes until you get to the 160 foot levels, sections 8N and larger.
1W thru 5N are welded solid rod, and the balance are site built. Granted, I
still need to do a re-read with a magnifying glass(prints are reduced for
handbook from C size!), but I've checked section weights, sizes, bracing
details, etc. Two pages of the same basic info (drawings CB70698 R1 &
CB81239 R1) shows load ratings at 70psi being 10SF on one, 5.8SF on the
other (same ANSI/EIA 222E spec). Anyone with specific details of the
difference at the 'shorter' heights?
Also, when comparing the costs of Rohn 55 complete (guys, anchors, etc,
etc.) to a SSV series the figures are closer than I would have thought. As
happens, I've found used SSV's easier to locate than used Rohn 55 sections,
and got to wondering about improving the load limits on SSV's. Has anyone
evaluated adding a set or two of guys to a SSV series to get the load
ratings up? there's no PE after my name, and I would rather ask a silly
question than start loading 'til she tilts'!
