I asked the question when I got a KT34A for back up to my KT34XA. I used to
use fine steel wool and it works well and fast..but several warned of taking
off too much of the surface so I switched to 3M abraisive pads that sub for
steel wool. These are also sold as scotties pads. Clean the part that is
not in the connecting joints just enough to get off the grime and corrosion.
Clean the overlapping joints more for good contact before applying the
antenna "gunk" such as KLM or Mosley sells.
