Hi Fred,

I knew that. But we were in the middle of the city, not in the open
savanna, for Christ's sake !

The whole point of my original posting was to say that lightning has a
peculiar way to strike in the most unexpected places. Otherwise, why not
strike a 35-meter tall building with lots of grounded hardware on top,
instead of a 10-meter tree nearby ??

Anyhow, can you imagine us laying down in the middle of the street and
rolling to quickly get wet ?? Maybe hams are an odd bunch of people, but
not THAT odd !! :-)

        A very good friend of mine grew up in South Africa.  When he was
growing
        up, every elementary school child in South Africa was taught the
        following question and answer:

        Q:  What do you do when there is a rain storm with lightning?

        A:  Lie down in the field and get wet.
