Good question Gene. Id "think" leaving the two together inside the pvc
jacket would help protect them from wx and mechanical damage for a
much longer time. The downside is it would be much more visible. (I
leave my radials on top of the ground because I have to coil them up
for summer grass mowing season.)
For my 26 radials, Ive used old #14 solid copper wire, then bought
some 1000' rolls of #17 aluminum fence wire at the local farm and
Fleet. At the base of my 160m 1/4 wave INV-L I use those aluminum
ground blocks with 3-6-9- screws to bolt typically three radials
twisted together in each hole.
