Deer/Tick control with minimum 160 meter noise at my QTH:
I have a very large Bombay species cat. An outside cat most of the day, I check
him for ticks when he comes in with a very fine toothed, lice type, comb. This
method has worked well, any ticks found were dropped into a container of near
boiling water. (most were found in his neck area)
In an effort to reduce the deer traffic, we cut down most of the apple trees. A
hedge row of red cedar trees are also visited late winter when the browse in
the woods gets scarce. This winter (2011-2012) I installed an electric fence
on 4 foot high stakes to protect the area. Tried to calculate the Deer-wire
contact height that included snow on the ground. (Note-My East Beverage
antenna start is close to the fence.)
Went to a Agway farm supply store and purchased a LI30 model low impedance 30
mile range controller. They say "low impedance" means it will keep on working
with vegetation touching the fence line. After installation found there was
enough voltage to light a florescent light bulb held close to the wire. A quick
transceiver check, and the noise blanker took out all of the pulse noise.
There was an indication of one Deer- fence collision, and they never came back.
This season, the cat has been free of ticks. Hope we can keep it that way.
