Two important points, Don. First, noise comes and goes, it isn't present 
all the time.  Second, a common mode choke does not in any way degrade 
the signal nor the performance of the antenna.  Thus, it's a win-win.  
No, it isn't free, the cores cost money. But it never hurts, and when 
noise comes on when you're trying to pull a weak one out of the noise, 
the last thing you want to be doing is adding chokes to see if they help.
