If you want some good local coverage (which it appears you do), then the
inverted L you have is the better alternative. A "T" or "Marconi" antenna
will give a low angle of maximum radiation that is fairly uniform in all
directions. This is best for DX. The inverted L will have a horizontally
polarized component with a higher radiation angle allowing for better
close-in coverage. The direction of best gain will be opposite to the
direction of the horizontal wire in the inverted L. For example, if the
open end of the horizontal wire points East, the best gain will be to the
West.
The same feed arrangement can be used with the "T", but the capacitor value
may be different. You will also need to change the length of the existing
horizontal element as well as adding the additional one in order to obtain
resonance.
You didn't mention your radial system, but the performance of either the
inverted L or the "T" will be highly dependent on the size of your radial
field. More radials will give better gain.
