I thought about that choice of THHN as I was concerned also about the
cracking of the outer, clear plastic insulation. I don't think that
applies to the underlayer of (colored) insulation. It seems possible
that the points of contact between the spreader and the wire will not
crack or flake because they are under pressure and not directly in the
weather. If so, the line may start to look a bit ragged after a few
years but still be completely functional wrt to the grip of the
spreader. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to try it.
There must be other #14 insulated wire that is more suited to outdoor
use and has the same O.D. as THHN. And if there is nothing sacred about
a nominal 600 ohms, #12 wires could be used with a reduction in surge
impedance.
I am sure ham ingenuity can deal with this.
