On your horizontal loop, you don't want it very high for receive only. Mine
is up at 15' and is incredibly quiet but no way close to my beverages. It
is also omni-directional and only responds to the high angle signals. It is
no where close when compared to a "real" beverage ! Good luck. Willy K3VW

I'd be interested to hear the views of anyone who has experimented with a
full size (or reduced size) horizontal loop as a 160m RX Ant. I don't have
room for long Beverages, but have a number of "Flags" in varying formats
and
configurations. (end-fire etc).

I have a plot left 40m x 40m where I could add a full size horizontal loop
as an extra RX antenna option. Of course this would work great if I could
get it a wavelength up, but realistically I'm limited to 10m support poles
i.e. 1/16 wave length up. Although the PC advises such an arrangement is
high angle only, I was wondering what real world experience you guys have
using anything similar as a RX option?
It would take quite a bit of effort to erect, (inc digging in 150m coax
run)
so debating if it would be worth the effort.

I am mindful the only time I could hear YC0LOW was on a dipole at 30ft, the
1st year I came to 160m. There was no signal on my so called "superior" low
angle RX Antenna's at the time. I had to remove it due to RF issues as it
went too close to the TX Antenna. How often is the high angle horizontal
RX antenna the "winner" ... often enough to bother..or not?

Any comment appreciated.

A day before the operation from YI9PSE ended, I did not have any
contacts showing in the online log. During the final upload,
four contacts for me appeared at once. One of them (80 CW) I know
is good, and the 2nd for 80 CW might be for a busted call I worked
earlier. There are two that I know I did NOT work, one of them
is for 160 meters (thus, my post HERE, else I would not mention it
on this list.)

In addition I thought I had a valid contact on 40 CW and this did
NOT appear in the log. That was several days ago.

I think it odd that this should happen all at once. As much as I
wish I had a good 160 Q, the fact is, I did not. While I am near 90
worked on Topband (all with 100 watts) I am not in the range of
working something like that. Even my 80 contact did not come easily,
I caught him on a return from a quick QSY to a dead 160.

I suppose I could send in my money via Paypal (I already did in fact)
and wait for my unearned card to appear, but there is no way I would
ever claim it for credit.

My question - (1) has this happened to anyone else here, and (2) is there
someone with a call similar to mine that is missing his 160 contact?

This is not a drill. I am serious.

ON4UN talks about sunrise enhancement at the location of the listener when
the listener experiences sunrise, although I have never seen this (I am a
night owl, so I am usually not up for sunrise).

What I have seen before and saw again tonight was signal enhancement of the
DX station at HIS sunrise.

Happened to me with a UA9 (could hardly believe I was hearing him),
happened
with 4X when I worked him in January, and it happened tonight with G3JMJ at
his sunrise. Lots of storm static, not much on the band, but Don was S9+
on
my inverted L. Tuned up the band and heard G3PQA also S9+ I have never
heard EU stations that strong before on 160 (this is my first season on top
band). His signal peaked at 0550 UTC, and gradually weakened over the
next
30 min. Maybe I need to re-read ON4UN (for like the 5th time).
